Writing: This past week we have been working on setting up our "Investigations Journals," writing at least one page per day/night. Free-writes, as a daily homework assignment, will help your child to work on individual writing goals and will enable them to increase their writing stamina. We are planning, to the best of our ability, to allow students 15 minutes of silent writing time per day, in order to help them when they get "stuck," and to work one-on-one with them with their individual writing needs.
Additionally, students have completed their DWA (Developing Writer's Assessment), which will allow us to evaluate their writing levels, target areas for growth, and create a writing plan for them for the year. Stay tuned for more information about your student's level in the upcoming weeks!
Reading: Starting in the 4th week of classes, we will begin our first unit on Short Stories, and will start our "Reading Dectectives" (Literature Circles) on Anton Chekov's short story, "The Bet." Short stories are a great way to review basic literary elements (plot, narrative, character development) as well as helping our students to learn how to work in small reading groups. We will also start our vocabulary building at this time, and will be working closely with Rashid to combine vocabulary study with science as well.
We would like to ask, as well, that you make sure your child has a choice book to read in the 3rd week of classes, as we will be doing individual reading assessments. The QRI (Qualitative Reading Inventory) will be administered to each student, to help us assess their present reading levels, and to develop reading plans for them for the upcoming year. Again, each student is asked to read 20 minutes per night, and if they need help finding a book, the library is now open for business!!
